Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's orders to restore Wikipedia immediately
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif issued orders to restore the online encyclopedia Wikipedia immediately.
In the statement signed by Prime Minister Shehbaz's Principal Secretary Dr. Toqairshah, it is said that the matter of banning Wikipedia
was placed before the Prime Minister and he formed a committee consisting of Minister of Law, Minister of Economic Affairs and Minister of Information.
A committee meeting was then held where members highlighted the usefulness of Wikipedia for information and awareness among the public,
students and teachers, the statement said.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said that imposing a complete ban on Wikipedia to prevent access to specific information
is not an appropriate measure and the unintended consequences of its closure negate its benefits.
It was further informed that the Prime Minister, based on the suggestions, ordered that the website be restored immediately and constituted
a separate committee comprising Law Minister, Information Minister, Commerce Minister and Communications Minister under the chairmanship
of Information and Technology Minister Aminul Haq.
The statement explained the rules and regulations of the Cabinet Committee which will be reviewed by the PTA regarding the move to block Wikipedia.
The committee will also suggest alternative technical measures and suggestions for removing or blocking objectionable content on Wikipedia
and other online websites, keeping in mind our social, cultural and religious sensitivities.
The statement said that the said committee will also make other proposals with the aim of curbing illegal online content in a balanced manner.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, it was said that the Ministry of Information and Technology will provide support to
the Cabinet Committee in this regard.
The statement said that the committee will send its report with recommendations to the federal cabinet for consideration within a week.
It should be noted that two days ago Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) blocked Wikipedia in Pakistan for not removing illegal content.
PTA spokesperson Malahat Ubaid confirmed that Wikipedia was blocked in the country, saying that Wikipedia had been contacted to remove the offending
content by issuing a court-ordered notice and removing the content reported to it. was instructed.
He said that Wikipedia did not comply to remove the offending content and did not appear before the authority, hence the directive was not
followed and the platform was blocked inside Pakistan.
The PTA said that it would consider removing restrictions from the website after the illegal content was removed.
On the other hand, the Wikimedia Foundation, the charity that runs Wikipedia, said in a statement that it "does not make decisions about what happened in the future .
