Pakistan revealed about the Dangerous presence of lead in some oil paints




A new study has revealed that 40 percent of oil paints used to paint homes in Pakistan contain illegal and dangerous levels of lead, posing a serious threat to children's health.


In this study jointly conducted by doctors of Aga Khan University Karachi and experts from Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEAP), samples of  oil paints taken from the market were analyzed.


LEAP is an international NGO and member of the United Nations Environment Program and World Health Organization's Global Alliance Against Lead Paint, working with policymakers and industry to end the sale of lead paint worldwide. does.


The organization aims to remove lead poisoning from children and improve the health of children worldwide, and is currently working with several  countries to eliminate lead paint.


The Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority has asked paint manufacturers to immediately remove lead from their products, the study said.


The study analyzed 60 oil paints of 21 brands sold in Karachi, which revealed that 40 percent of the oil paints had lead levels higher than the  limits recommended by Pakistan and the World Health Organization.


According to research, the level of lead in some paints is 1000 times higher than the limit set by the World Health Organization.


Lead pollution has serious adverse effects on children's health, causing anemia and stunting.


The report said that lead poisoning from paint and other sources is affecting 47 million children in Pakistan, while the country is losing  38 billion dollars every year.


In 2017, the PSQCA issued a policy on lead content in paint that limited lead levels in paint to 100 parts per million.


A joint study by the Aga Khan University and the Lead Exposure Elimination Project found high levels of lead in 9 major paint brands and 8 minor brands, with some brands claiming to be 'lead-free' even though their paints In large amounts of lead, red and yellow paints are the most harmful in this respect.


According to Dr. Zafar Fatemi, Professor of Environmental Health and Climate Change at the Aga Khan University, lead is neurotoxic and can  reduce mental and physical development in children and increase violent behavior.


He said that lead affects the entire body system, causing anemia, growth retardation, kidney diseases and cardiovascular diseases as well.


Director of Governance and Policy WWF-Pakistan Dr. Imran Saqib Khalid pointed out that Pakistan has the second highest rate of lead poisoning among children in the world.


Reducing lead in paint is an effective and cost-effective way to improve children's health, reduce poverty and contribute to the United Nations ' Sustainable Development Goals, he said.
