How to stop rising rates of obesity and diabetes in Asia

Due to declining demand in Western countries, multinational food and beverage companies are now looking to people in Africa, Asia and

Latin America as the new consumers of packaged food. Thus, other serious diseases related to diabetes may increase globally.

Governments of various countries are taking strict measures against the factors that can potentially lead to obesity, including unhealthy food.

In Singapore, 1 million citizens are likely to be affected by diabetes by 2050. For this reason, Singapore has now directed soda

manufacturers in the country to reduce the amount of sugar.

Obesity and other everyday diseases are now becoming a 'silent' long-term challenge for countries as governments suffer huge losses in

health and productivity due to ill health.

But only piecemeal legislation will not improve the public health sector, rather governments should change the lifestyle of people at

the national level by providing education and awareness and facilitating their access to healthy food.
