Google Play Store removed 14 applications on the request of NADRA
NADRA had formally raised the issue of data breach of Pakistani citizens with the American technology company owned by Alphabet.
NADRA has written a letter to Google on "violation of personal information and privacy of citizens by applications on Google Play Stores".
The letter added that these applications are using NADRA's name and products 'illegally and fraudulently' to mislead users by giving the
impression that the applications are in some way officially affiliated, authorized by NADRA. or operating and therefore 'gaining unnecessary
reputation and services for their apps'.
Pointing out that Google's impersonation policy does not allow users to impersonate someone else, Nadra informed the company that 'some apps
are 'allows to provide products and services' and thus obtains personal information
from Pakistani citizens.
The authority requested Google to 'immediately remove all such apps from the Google Play Store and stop such illegal activities of sharing
and selling NADRA's proprietary, sensitive information, which has serious security implications for Pakistan. There may be and at the
same time the privacy of citizens may be violated.
The organization said that publication, promotion of such apps using NADRA's name or logo should not be allowed in future.
Chairman of NADRA Tariq Malik said that in response to NADRA's letter, How Google has removed at least 14 applications from its app store.
Apart from writing to the Google, NADRA has also introduced an AI system to protect the citizens' personal information from the illegal activities.
Added that after assuming office in 2021, he had voluntarily given up 'super access' to personal data of citizens and made it inaccessible even to NADRA employees.
