How will Pakistan's first digital census be conducted

Pakistan, the world's fifth largest country by population, is gearing up for its first digital census, where the traditional use of  paper and pen will be replaced by tablets and online applications.

The nationwide exercise will cost Rs 34 billion and will officially begin on March 1 and be completed by April 1.

After that, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), which has been entrusted with the task of conducting the national census, will  take another 30 days to release the final results.

Census has been conducted in Pakistan in 1951, 1961, 1972, 1981, 1998 and 2017 so far.

According to the census conducted in the year 2017, the population of Pakistan is around 21 crores.

What will be the procedure of digital census?

Until now, the process involved enumerators visiting each house and filling out paper forms, but next month, government representatives will go door-to-door with tablets in hand to record information.

For this, the Pakistan Statistical Office has recruited 126 thousand enumerators and purchased the same number of tablets.

Each enumerator will be in charge of collecting information from two census blocks.

A 'block' is a geographical unit for the census, consisting of 200-250 houses. At present there are 185,509 census blocks in the country.

Even those who do not have a national identity card will be counted in this census.
